Is Sort of…good enough?
Recently I made a stop at one of our local fast food restaurants. I am typically not a fast food eater for a variety of reasons, but it was a busy day and I had not eaten since breakfast. Because of the Coronavirus, drive through lines have been exceptionally long. However, new guidelines are allowing patrons to go inside to order. So, to avoid the long wait, I went into the restaurant to pick up my “to go” order.
On the door of the restaurant, I saw a sign which stated that employees and customers are always required to wear a mask. There were very few people in the restaurant and the ones who were ordering were well spaced and wearing masks. This restaurant has kiosks available to place and pay for orders. So, I felt comfortable that I could order my sandwich and be on my way with minimal risk to my health.
After placing my order at the kiosk, I walked over to the side of the counter where completed orders are picked up. I watched as two young men were preparing orders for the drive through customers as well as my chicken sandwich. That was when I noticed something very confusing. The young men were “sort of” wearing masks. What I mean is, their masks were around their ears and only covering their chin. Their nose and mouth were completely exposed.
As I watched them prepare my food, they were constantly carrying on a conversation and laughing at each other with my food just an arm’s length from their face and nose. When my order was ready, the manager called my number. I walked up to him, he handed me my bag and said thank you. Unable to resist stating the obvious, I said to him, “You know it does not do any good to wear a mask if it only covers your chin, especially while preparing food.” And all he could say in response was, “I know” as if he had no control over the situation. In the kindest and most respectful way, I told the manager I would not be back. And as I was leaving, I said, “You know, sometimes, sort of is not good enough.”
Now, you may think this was an over-reaction to the situation. Not everyone agrees with the required face covering rules we have currently. But we can all agree that “sort of” does not accomplish anything in this case.
As I was leaving the restaurant, I realized that the same is true with our Christian walk. It is easy to fall into a “sort of” Christian lifestyle. Jesus did not call disciples to be sort of followers. “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” Mark 8:14b Our Lord cannot use “sort of” followers. The church does not need any more “sort of” Christians. It is sort of like wearing a mask around your chin. Sometimes sort of is not good enough.
