Blessings

“The Lord said to Moses, ‘Tell Aaron and his sons, this is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them: The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace.’” (Numbers 6:22-26)

Have you ever felt blessed? How often have we said, “I am so blessed to have healthy children.” “I have been so blessed to receive a promotion at work.” “We are so blessed to live in such a nice home.” It is good to feel blessed and appreciate the things you have and the people in your life. But what happens when your circumstances are not so perfect? What happens when your child becomes gravely ill? What happens when your spouse’s job is eliminated because of a pandemic and your household income is cut in half? What happens when the bank is calling you daily because you are behind on your mortgage payments? Does that mean you are no longer blessed? Did you get in the wrong line or do something bad that caused you to miss out on the blessings? Typically, we associate being blessed with positive circumstances in our lives. Plenty of money, comfort, and few problems. But maybe that is a short-sighted view of what it really means to be blessed.

The true meaning of the word blessing is, to be made holy. To be consecrated or set apart for God’s use. To be an extension of God’s Grace. Certainly, the gifts of comfort, success, and friendship are all unmerited blessings from the Lord. God pours out His grace on all people and we ought to receive these undeserved blessings with thanksgiving and praise. They should lead us to glorify God. But often we are prone to having the wrong attitude regarding our blessings. We can begin to feel entitled or prideful and begin to seek happiness in worldly things. We can tend to look down upon those with less than us. They must have done something wrong. God is certainly not blessing them.

In reality, blessing has nothing to do with wealth or comfort or success. Blessing is about holiness. It is about being aware of our sinful state and recognizing that only through Christ are we made holy. There is nothing on earth that can truly compare to that type of blessing. God’s spiritual blessings far out weight any earthly blessing. You are blessed because you have been adopted by the King. You are blessed because you have been forgiven. You are blessed because you have a guaranteed inheritance.

On this day which God has given you, recognize your true blessings. In wealth or poverty, in comfort or pain, in happiness or sorrow, may the Lord bless you and keep you. May He make His face shine on you and may He turn His face toward you. That is where you will find peace.
